Crop Production Masterclass Syllabus

Introduction to crop production. Overview of the importance of crop production in agriculture, food security, and the economy.

Overview of different crop cultivation techniques, including traditional cultivation methods, conventional farming methods, organic farming, intensive farming, sustainable farming methods, modern farming techniques, precision farming, conservation agriculture, and integrated farming systems.

Soil tillage practices such as conventional tillage, reduced tillage, no-till farming, minimum tillage, mulch tillage, vertical tillage, rotational tillage, deep tillage, and subsoiling.

Factors to consider when selecting crops to grow, including climate suitability, soil characteristics and suitability, water availability and quality, economic factors, market demand, crop rotation and diversity, infrastructure and logistics, labour requirements, technological compatibility, environmental impact, legal and regulatory considerations, and some others.

Classification of crops; cereals, legumes, roots and tubers, fruits, vegetables, cole crops, nuts, herbs and spices, flowers, and their uses.

Group discussion on selection of suitable crops and varieties specifically for your farm, based on certain known factors such as soil and climate conditions.

Crop planning, crop rotation and farm layout.

Seed selection, seed treatment, planting, and spacing. Regarding seed selection, discussion will focus on crop suitability, variety selection, seed quality, genetic purity, and adaptability. Regarding seed treatment, disinfection, inoculation, priming, pelleting, and protection will be the discussion points. Discussions on planting will focus on timing, depth, soil penetration, equipment, and moisture. In respect of spacing, discussion will be on row spacing, intra-row spacing, population density, intercropping, and mechanical considerations.

Understanding soil, climate, and water requirements of crops.

Overview of planting, cultivation, and harvesting techniques for various crops.

Nutrient requirements of crops and fertilizer application. Organic and inorganic fertilizers, application methods and timing.

Soil management and fertilization techniques: importance of soil health and fertility, and overview of techniques for maintaining soil quality, organic matter management, and soil amendments.

Water and Irrigation Management, Various irrigation systems viz, surface flooding, canals, furrow irrigation, sprinkler, and drip.

Weed management. Definition of weed, types of weeds, impact of weeds, weed biology and ecology, principles of weed management, weed identification, weed monitoring and mapping, economic thresholds, herbicide resistance, environmental and health considerations.

Weed control methods namely mechanical, chemical, cultural, biological weed control methods, and integrated weed management. Strategies to prevent the introduction and establishment of weeds.

Integrated pest and disease management (IPM). Definition, goals, and principles of IPM, common crop pests and crop diseases and their life cycles, components of IPM, implementation of IPM, benefits of IPM, and challenges in IPM.

Strategies for preventing and controlling pests and diseases in crops. Cultural control, mechanical and physical control, biological control, chemical control, genetic control, and behavioral control.

Harvesting and post-harvest techniques. Best practices of harvesting, transportation, storage, processing, and packaging to maintain high quality of farm produce and minimize losses.

Overview of sustainable agriculture practices including organic farming, agroforestry, minimum tillage, cover cropping, crop residue management, and integrated pest management.

Successful crop production models. Examples of successful crop production practices and models from different places.

 Feedback collection for improvement of future seminars.

Venue of the Masterclasses

  1. a) The physical venue where the masterclasses are holding is AIH Corporate Centre, No. 18 Oba Akenzua Avenue, Off Osuntokun Avenue, Old Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.
  2. b) For those who cannot attend physically, it is possible to attend online. The link for online attendance will be shared to you as soon as you complete your registration. Be sure to indicate on the space provided for such on the registration form that you prefer online attendance in your particular case.

Registration Fees

  1. a) To attend the 5 masterclasses: N220,000 or  (600 USD forex registration)
  2. b) To attend any 4 masterclasses: N180,000 or  (500 USD forex registration)
  3. c) To attend any 3 masterclasses: N150,000 or  (400 USD forex registration)
  4. d) To attend any 2 masterclasses: N100,000 or  (250 USD forex registration)
  5. e) To attend any 1 masterclass: N60,000 or (150 USD forex registration)

 

Full payment is required to secure a seat on the desired masterclass. Payment is online. All payments are non-refundable. However, after payment, date change is possible if the intending participant so desires.

 

Group Registration Discounts offered:

  1. a) Registering 5 to 9 people together attracts 5 per cent discount on total registration fees.
  2. b) Registering 10 or more people together attracts 10 per cent discount on total registration fees.

Each masterclass will run for the whole day from 9.00 am to 6.00pm. An hour lunch break will be included and provided. Tea break, refreshments, and farm-fresh fruits will also be provided. Abundant highest-quality bottled water will be provided for participants throughout the day. All these are included in the fees paid by each registered participant.

For participants coming from outside Ibadan, comfortable hotel accommodation can be arranged on their behalf in Bodija area in close proximity to the seminar location. This will however be at a discounted extra cost arranged with the hotel, courtesy of the seminar organizers.

Qualification

Certificates will be issued to all the participants at the completion of the seminars. Each certificate will include the name of the participant as well as the name and details of the masterclass attended.

Resource team

The seminar pattern will include lectures from world class academics and professionals, power point presentations, case studies, video clips, testimonies from practicing farmers, policy makers and government officials. There will also be focused group discussions with agricultural experts to thrash current agricultural problems and evolve possible solutions. Masterclass Participants will be encouraged to participate in this.

Practical experience

Masterclass Participants will have opportunity for one on one interactions with some of the biggest crop and livestock farmers in Nigeria.

Lecture Materials

 At the end of the masterclass, participants will be given soft copies of the lectures of the masterclass which they registered for.

Masterclass materials

Masterclass Participants will also be given branded seminar notebooks, biros, pencils, erasers, rulers, for notetaking. Individual in-class photographs will unobtrusively be taken.

Free consultation

Masterclass Participants who pay for the whole Comprehensive Agricultural Masterclass will also have opportunity for a free one-hour, one on one consulting service at the very end of the masterclass before departing the seminar venue.

Consultancy services

Should any Masterclass Participant require any further consulting services which may include Business Plan formulation, Business Registration, Starting and Running a Business, Securing Farm Land, and so forth, we can provide these services too for whosoever so desires. However, these further consulting engagements will be paid for by the client at discounted market rates.
